ENCINO MAN
Reviewed February 4th, 2000 by John Randall

Pauly Shore (Son in Law), Sean Astin (The Goonies) and Brendan Fraser (The Mummy) star in this so-so comedy about a frozen caveman and how he absorbs modern day life. That is basically the whole movie summed up in a single sentence.

David (Astin) and Stoney (Shore) dig up the ancient guy who is frozen. They later name him Link and the movie basically explores how people start to like Link. The movie does support some funny dialogue and some funny scenes – but the movie never really delivers.

The video is presented in 1.85:1 widescreen and is not 16x9 enhanced. Overall this disc looks pretty good. Sharpness seems to be a bit off but the colors and black levels seem dead on.

The audio is presented in DD 2.0 and is just your below average soundtrack. It would seem that many discs like this would sell more if a 5.1 remix would be generated. Dialogue is ok most of the time, but seems to distort once in awhile. Even with this, some of the more active sound sequences sounded ok.

The only extras were a trailer and a very short featurette. Studios need to start digging up some good material even from lesser known titles.

This movie is really only recommended for die-hard comedy fans. Seeing it first time might leave you wanting something much better. It does have some funny moments though. The movie is rated PG and runs about 80 minutes.
