MALLRATS
Reviewed August 19th, 1999 by Staff

Jay and Silent Bob are back! Don’t know who they are? Watch Clerks first. If you’re a Kevin Smith fan, you’re gonna love this deluxe edition of the movie.

Jeremy London and Jason Lee play two best friends whom after both getting dumped, end up spending the day at the mall. That is only the beginning. The entire concept of the movie is hard to explain without giving anything away. So we won’t here. Let’s just say that you see a few side story lines and a few faces that you may recognize such as Ben Affleck, Shannon Doherty and even comic book creator Stan Lee. And of course Jason Mewes (Jay) and Kevin Smith (Silent Bob) recreate their roles from Clerks.

The video is presented in 1.85:1 widescreen format and is 16x9 enhanced. The transfer is very beautiful compared to cable and VHS versions of the film. The transfer is not perfect, but well done.

Audio has been remastered in DD 5.1 but don’t expect much in the way of spilt surrounds or a sub work out. The main attraction to this movie is the dialogue, not sound effects or music.

The greatest thing about this DVD besides the movie itself, is the extras. Universal did things VERY right on this account. How about over an hour of deleted scenes hosted by Kevin Smith? Also inlucded is a commentary track by Kevin Smith, Ben Affleck, Jason Lee, Jason Mewes, and others. There is also a great behind the scenes featurette, and more stuff to look forward to.

This is a great cult movie that did not get the credit it should have in the theatres. If you’re a fan of Clerks or Chasing Amy, pick this disc up! We’re all going back to find the sailboat… or is that schooner?
