ROMEO & JULIET (WILLIAM SHAKESPEAR’S)
Reviewed June 18th, 1999 by Staff

If you do not know the story behind the classic tale of Romeo & Juliet, then go out and buy the book first! This is the story of two young people who all in love, the only problem is that their familes hate each other. Baz Luhrmann directs this modern day Romeo & Juliet. Set in today's time period, but using the original text. It takes some time to get used to (i.e. a gun instead of a sword but they call it a sword), but as time goes on you learn to forget about the language and get lost in the story, music and great acting.

The movie has an all-star cast which inclues Leonardo DiCaprio [Romeo], Claire Danes [Juliet], Brian Dennehy, John Leguiamo, Paul Sorvino, and more.

The video is presented in 2.35:1 widescreen and is not 16x9 enhanced and is on a dual-layered disc for less compression. The transfer was well done with the black level and sharpness being almost dead on.

The audio is presented in DD 5.1 and WILL put your sub to a workout. Listen as the fireworks explode all over the room. Very lifelike. However, sometimes, the dialog is a little off (muffled by bass), but overall very well mixed.

Fox once again gets a D- for supplements because only a stereo trailer is given on the disc. Fox needs to add more content and give us more 16x9.

The movie is a great way to get young people into Shakespeare. This DVD is a highly recommeded.
