STEEL MAGNOLIAS
Reviewed July 31st, 2000 by John Randall

This is a very heart warming tale about a group of close women deep in the south over the course of three years.

The movie is adapted from a play written by Robert Harling who partially wrote it based on the tragic story of his sister.

This movie has an all star cast that includes Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis, and the very funny Tom Skerritt.

If you have not seen this movie, we really do not want to give anything away. This movie has it all – romance, humor, drama and more.

The chemistry that the actors have with each other is wonderful.

The video is presented in 1.85:1 and is 16x9 enhanced. The transfer has never looked better even though the movie is over 10 years old now. The image isn’t perfect, but better than you’ll ever see on cable or VHS!

The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 and does pretty well for the most part. The score (which is awesome) really sounds good, but a 5.1 mix would have been a lot better! Dialogue seems clear.

Extras include a director’s commentary, some “deleted scenes” which were more like short shavings off other scenes, a documentary called “In Full Bloom” in which the writer, director and Shirley MacLaine talk about the movie (it was nice to see the director tell the story about his sister), trailers, talent files and a great isolated score.

This movie is a feel-good type of movie and worth seeing. The DVD presentation is good. Buy it.
