STUART LITTLE (WIDESCREEN)
Reviewed May 2nd, 2000 by John Randall

E.B. White’s book comes to alive in this great FAMILY movie!

Without giving too much of the plot away, this movie is basically about a creative mouse named Stuart is adopted into the Little family as George Little’s (human) little brother. George doesn’t like the situation too much and neither does the family cat named Snowbell. The movie overall is pretty predictable, but can be entertaining just the same. Some have even called the movie a bit depressing due to the fact that it’s a bit about acceptances and how troubled families can sometimes be.

This movie is pure CGI heaven. Great special effects and great voices aid in the movie’s performances. Michael J. Fox does wonderful as the voice of Stuart. Other members of the cast include Geena Davis, Dabney Coleman, David Alan Grier and of course the great Nathan Lane.

First off, the image is presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen and is breathtaking. Columbia/TriStar does it again with a perfect transfer. Detail, color level, black level, sharpness – EVERYTHING – is perfect. (Note: A full frame version is also available separately)

The audio track is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 and is almost as equally awesome as the transfer. Low base and the highest highs are crystal clear without distortion. Dialogue and the score seem perfect as well.

The extras that are included really make this disc even better. Included is: an audio commentary by the director and the animation supervisor, an audio commentary with the senior visual effects supervisors, the great “Making It Big” HBO special, a visual effects featurette, gag reels, conceptual reel, animation auditions, interactive games, artist screen tests, production sketches and designs, talent files, three music videos, theatrical trailers and even some deleted scenes with commentary!

Overall, this is a great family film and even a better DVD than that. The movie is rated PG for a little naughty language and runs 84 minutes.
